Samoa Association of Women Graduates

Three cheers as SAWG launches into cyberspace.
30 April 2002

Samoa Association of Women Graduates launched its new website www.sawg.ws, unveiled its logo and distributed the first edition of it's SAWG quarterly newsletter at the CSL office on Tuesday 30 May. The website and newsletter simply expands the capacity to inform and be informed and network with others; local and overseas. Information about the association and its commitments are posted on the website including its officers, members, projects and information about access to scholarships and funding available via affiliated organizations such as IFUW - International Federation of University Women, and PGWNet (Pacific Graduate Women's Network). Website designer Derek Slaven from CSL and also SAWG vice president Laeimau Oketevi Tanuvasa-Savea said that the website is much needed for SAWG as a stepping stone for it's own members to be utilized as a tool for developing international understanding, co-operation and friendship. The website will enable graduate women to share and use their expertise to effect change in enhancing education, which can influence and benefit society, as well as advocating the improvement of the status of women and girls.

The logo was designed by several members of the executive and their choice for the Samoan ava bowl symbolized representation, acknowledgement and recognition. These are Samoan cultural values which are underscored by the continuing tradition of the ava ceremony itself. The ava cup holding the fire is an adaptation of the lamp of learning which is the logo for the mother organization -IFUW- International Federation of University Women. President of SAWG Dr Emma Kruse Vaai explained further that not only can we partake of the communal ava drink from the coconut cup but we also share the fire of knowledge which we received as graduates for the enlightenment and development of Samoa and the international community which we are also members of.
